Island Classics — pua of the Pacific islands

Every island has its pua — the flowers that carry meaning beyond their shape. The anthurium for welcome, the ginger for strength, the spider lily and pua kenikeni strung close for togetherness. Our artisans hand-shape all twelve, foam petal by petal in Bangkok, the way they have since 1980, so each one keeps its own beauty, made to order and ready when you are.

Twelve flowers

What lives in this collection

Twelve tropical flowers, twelve different ways our artisans fold, curl and shape foam by hand — the broad heart of an anthurium, the fine threads of a spider lily, the tight little face of a pikake. Each handmade Hawaiian flower has its own place in a lei, haku or hula hair piece, and each is made the same way it has been since 1980: petal by petal, to order, for wholesale worldwide.

About this collection

Handmade island flowers, since 1980

Foamflora has made handmade foam flowers in Bangkok since 1980, sold wholesale worldwide. Island Classics gathers the flowers of the Hawaiian and Polynesian garden that fall outside the single-flower categories — anthurium, bird of paradise, lily, spider lily, ginger, heliconia, pua kenikeni, ylang ylang, pikake, ‘ilima, hala and fern leaf. They are the pieces that give a lei, haku or headpiece its shape: something tall, something fine, something small enough to fill a gap.

Each flower head is hand-assembled from foam, petal by petal, in the shape and coloring of the living plant. Foam does not wilt in heat, bruise where it is handled, or brown overnight, so a headpiece survives a season of performances, shipping and storage. Sizes here run from a 2.2 cm pikake to a 17 cm anthurium or a 20 × 23 cm bird of paradise, and most designs come in several colorways — spider lily 1 alone in fifteen.

Everything is made to order: minimum 100 pieces per design, 20 pieces per color, shipped worldwide from our family workshop. Checkout takes no payment — add the designs you want, and we email a full quote including shipping within 1 business day.

Quick answers

Island Classics questions, answered

What counts as an “island classic”?

Every flower we make that isn’t plumeria, hibiscus, tiare, orchid, gardenia or o’hai ali’i. Twelve in all: anthurium, bird of paradise, lily, spider lily, ginger, heliconia, pua kenikeni, ylang ylang, bougainvillea, pikake, ‘ilima, hala — plus a fern leaf for greenery. Use the flower filter above the grid to see one at a time.

Which ones work best in a lei or haku?

Pua kenikeni, pikake, ‘ilima, bougainvillea and hala are the stringing and filling flowers — small, light and made to sit close together. Spider lily and ginger give a haku height and texture. Bird of paradise and the large lilies are statement blooms, usually one or three to a piece rather than a row.

Are these real flowers?

No — each is hand-assembled from foam petals in the shape and color of the living flower. They do not wilt, bruise or lose color in heat and humidity, and they hold up to years of wear and re-use.

Can I mix flowers to reach the minimum?

The minimum is 100 pieces per design, with at least 20 pieces per color — so a 100-piece order of spider lily 1 can be split across five colorways, but it can’t be split across five different flowers. Order as many designs as you like in the same shipment.

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes — we ship from Bangkok to customers worldwide, including the USA, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
