A flower that carries a meaning
In the islands, a flower is never only decoration. It marks who is dancing, what is being celebrated, who is being remembered. Tattoo carries meaning the same way — the turtle for safe passage, the shark tooth for strength, the gecko as a guardian. A tribal flower is what happens when the two are put together.
We design every motif ourselves, in the tradition rather than copied from it, and we lay it on the petal so the line follows the curve instead of fighting it. The result is a flower a dancer can wear for its meaning as much as its colour — beautiful from the back of the hall, and saying something up close.

Motifs borrowed with care
Tribal flowers — islander flowers — are Foamflora’s own creation: the motifs of indigenous Hawaiian and Polynesian tattoo laid onto handmade foam tiare and plumeria. Honu the turtle, mo‘o the gecko, shark tooth, and the hooks and spears of the Maui tattoo are each drawn onto the petal by hand, so the line follows the curve of the flower. These motifs are not ours to own — they belong to Hawaiian and wider Polynesian tattoo, where a mark is earned, given and read. So we work inside the tradition rather than lifting from it: we never copy a person’s tattoo and never reproduce a mark that belongs to a family or a lineage. Every composition on this page was designed in our family workshop in Bangkok and is original work copyright Foamflora.
Most designs are built on the tiare, whose five flat petals give the clearest canvas for a bold line, at 10–11 cm. Others sit on the plumeria, 6–9 cm, where the overlapping petals let the pattern curl rather than sit flat. Double-layer tiare add a second row of petals for depth — the designs that carry a hula headpiece on their own. Because they are foam, the color and the line stay put: no wilting, no bruising, no fading through a season of performances, shipping and storage.

Tribal flower questions, answered
What is a tribal flower?
A handmade foam tiare or plumeria with an indigenous Hawaiian or Polynesian tattoo pattern drawn onto its petals — turtle, gecko, shark tooth, Maui motifs and more. We also call them islander flowers. The flower shape is traditional; the pattern is original artwork by Foamflora.
What do the motifs mean?
Honu, the turtle, stands for safe passage and finding the way home. Mo‘o, the gecko, is a guardian figure. Niho manō, the shark tooth, speaks of strength and protection at sea. The Maui hooks and spears carry provision and perseverance. A tribal flower lets a dancer wear the meaning as well as the colour.
Will the pattern fade or wash out?
No. The color is worked into the foam, not printed on top, so it survives heat, humidity, handling and years of re-use without wilting, bruising or fading.
